i deeply appreciated this book. that being said, i don't necessarily recommend it - because i feel like unless you are from the region or have put a lot of work into understanding it, you cannot get out of this book what i got out of it? many reviews describe it as impenetrable - and it is. ultimately however it's very clear that the impenetrability was the point, with even the final story being in untranslated pashto. this is not a book that caters to people
so yeah, loved the book, could not ask my friends who arent from the region to read it

Really good read! I enjoyed the scattering of Pakhto and Farsi all across the book. A book that's good for a one-time reading, but also packed with so much that you'll easily find more on a second reading.
Minor: Gun violence and Violence
The Afghanistan-American war is happening in the background of this book, and several members of the family have been affected by it. None of the kids get wrapped up in it, but there are a lot of stories from older members about the violence and death that they've experienced or witnessed.
