Okay so this book wasn't what I expected but I loved it. I know many people especially one's who love greek mythology did not enjoy this book. I am a big mythology fan myself but I didn't have an issue with the book. There were a few times where I thought the portrayal of the gods was a but strange but nothing big enough to influence my enjoyment of the story.

The writing style was great. This is the first book I've read by Alexandra Bracken and I definitely want to read more! The Darkest Minds has been on my tbr for a while so I'm excited to read that soon :)

The ending was quite abrupt and a bit under explained imo and that's part of the reason my I didn't give it 5 stars. I genuinely enjoyed it but it just wasn't five stars for me.

Edit: After sleeping on it I decided to give it 4 instead of 5.75. There were no real plot twists and everything that was explained I had already guessed before. The things I couldn't figure out on my own weren't explained in the end which left me confused.

This story is essentially The Hunger Games meets Percy Jackson meets Scythe. It’s one of those books that you can’t put down, but once you finish it, you realize that it wasn’t that great. The suspense keeps you reading and helps you forget a lot of the inconsistencies, but after the (subpar) resolution, you’re left wondering why you were so enthralled.

Every seven years, the Agon begins. As punishment for a past rebellion, nine Greek gods are forced to walk the earth as mortals, hunted by the descendants of ancient bloodlines, all eager to kill a god and seize their divine power and immortality. Our main character, Lore, wants nothing more to run away and hide from the Agon that took away her family and changed her life forever. But when a wounded Athena comes to her for help and offers to take down the man that killed Lore’s family, she has to make the decision to step out the shadows and claim her right to the Agon.
•
Growing up reading the Percy Jackson series, this book piqued my interests immensely. It reminded me of the Hunger Games in a way, immortality being the goal after one kills a god. There were so many things that I wanted to love about this book but the deeper we got into Lore’s story, the background story of the other characters and the hunt for Lore’s family’s killer, the more I became disconnected from the story.
•
There was nothing inherently wrong with the story and it was very action-packed, high stakes and engaging but there were lots of little things the characters said or did and the direction the book began to take that over all just took me out of the story. I loved the concept of this novel but the lack of execution/explanations just left me confused and disconnected.

This book is stunning. It was amazing to get to know Lore and go on this epic journey with her. Such an original story and I love Greek Mythology!

We all need more standalones in the world, yay! I’m just gonna be really straightforward and say if you loved Percy Jackson as a kid, this is kinda like that but much more violent and a little less humorous BUT it has a nice side of snarky gods. I did find myself bookmarking a number of quotable sections that had me reflecting a bit about friendship and weapon choices, and war— you know those weekend time-passers. This is a story of finding belonging in a harsh (brutal, masochistic) community, testing loyalties, believing in friends, and most importantly reckoning with past mistakes—so there’s like 5% romance which I also loved to see the focus slide away from. It’s super fast paced with lots of twists—an ideal book to get you out of a book slump.
