I like Harry Hole. I think we learn a lot more about him in this book. Having said that, this book was unsatisfying. Definitely not my favorite of the series, but still, a great series.

Not my usual type of read. Interesting, twisty, unexpected plot. Definitely not a cosy mystery, more along the lines of Bosch or Martin Walker.

Harry Hole is an interesting character. Well written. Will likely try another one before 100% decided if liked or not.

SpoilerCertainly not one of the best Harry Hole novels. Hole’s emotionally-stunted, grunting machismo has gone pretty stale. Also did not like Nesbo’s gratuitous tangents explaining concepts about physics or economics that totally break from the narrative and only serve to show how smart the author is, sprinkled in with some misogynistic riffs. All that notwithstanding, enjoyed the big twist at the end and it remained an engaging page turner.

Harry Hole, the gruff and cantankerous, murder solving detective is back. We have a multi layered story (sometimes with a bit too many coincidences) with murder, betrayal, redemption, and discovery. It was a very good addition, but there were sections that did feel a bit drawn out and maybe 1 or 2 many twists and turns. Overall, it is still a solid work by Jo Nesbo. If you like a good detective/mystery that has twists and turns, then the latest Harry Hole does not disappoint.

Another good book by Nesbo. His stories are compelling and have lots of twists and turns. This one had a lot of red herrings, but I still enjoyed it.

I am always excited for a new Harry Hole book, but I just don't know if this one was my favorite. It's not that it wasn't good, it's just that from the discovery of the murder victim at the beginning to the big reveal of the murderer at the end, I just couldn't wrap my head around these major events in the world of Hole. Utterly shocking. I am more curious than usual to see where he goes from here, because wow.

The fine print: received ARC from Edelweiss.
