I like the narrator and illustrations. The tragedy in children’s fiction makes this series stand out.

There definitely is a formula in this series with the children getting dropped off to an

incompetent

guardian,

Count Olaf (in disguise) finds them, no one believes the children, dramatic scene where children narrowly escape Count Olaf’s clutches, Count Olaf escapes.

This book does break the formula a little bit by using the lumber mill and Sir as a guardian, a workplace instead of a home. Violet and Klaus also have some character growth, which is nice.

That plot would’ve been just fine without the issues mentioned in my content warning notes.

This book....was far more ridiculous than the previous three. I did like the plot discussion in this one more than the last one. But, there were several things that felt way too cartoony or silly? Which wasn't the tone set up strongly in book one. (Like, how does a piece of gum pull a tree sized log off a machine? Or having a sword slash teeth fight with an infant??? Idk.)

Hanging on because I want to see the series through and they're at least comical and easy to read.

Also, all the adults in this world are always so infuriatingly naive and stupid. Please just believe the kids for once.

This is such a strange installment in the series. The new characters are so odd and annoying, and Count Olaf's presence is almost nonexistent? And the hypnotism thing feels so out of place. Not really my thing.
