Read the unabridged version as a child. Upto this day, I still remember how I envisioned the Alps. Taught me how it feels good to always have a cheerful heart.

May 2022. Listened to this children’s classic on audiobook a couple weeks ago. Quaint but not really my thing, I probably would’ve enjoyed it more had I been introduced to it when I was young.

This was the first chapter book I read to my 4yo and 6yo. It had beautiful descriptions of the landscape and Heidi’s big feelings, etc., but it maybe was a bit verbose for my littles. They hung in there and never complained, even asking for it at times, but I’m not sure how much they were able to comprehend. That said, I think it was a good discipline for them to sit and listen, and they did enjoy it. It was a happy experience. As for me, I wondered things like how Clara went to the bathroom when she visited Heidi, and how Peter was given a letter from Grandmamma in the village to deliver the same morning when he lived halfway up the mountain himself. And what happened to Heidi’s aunt?

40 odd years ago I loved the TV show yet, for reasons I still don't understand, I never picked up the book.
The story is lovely, and for me the highlight has been the description of bucolic Alpine meadows.
It is a truly wonderful book that, unsurprisingly, had me in tears on more than one occasion

Re-reading this with my kids for school was delightful. Definitely some interesting cultural tidbits of its time. But still a lovely story of life and redemption of a hard hand.
