It was fun but a lot happened in the last third of the book and it felt like it had a lot of false endings which I did not enjoy
However Ava's journey was fun and her enemies to lovers thing with Kaye was so angsty I loved it!

I liked the overall vibe, the reliable plot and character development, the queer yearning, and the mildly satisfying end. I did not like the one-dimensional character development, some of the sloppiness that came out of making the plot make sense, and some personal notes. There were some aspects that I feel were stitched together sloppily and I would've liked more:
-Leander foreshadowing
-more critical thinking from Kay
-maybe a bit more versatility from Ava, more struggles with her discipline around blood, more depth to her feelings and her guilt as we understand vampires from this world have very little impulse control around blood
-more emotion and, perhaps, guilt shown in Ava's mother's actions as she is married to a piece of shit who abused her daughter
-and a small side note that I almost HATED whoever read the book for the audio because Ava's voice was sooooo annoying
But I might be asking for a novel at this point

this was... okay. i loved the ending and the character development and kayeava were cute in the end. but i feel like the push and pull of "oh i'm a vampire, i'm a monster" and "i might be human after all" got old. i don't really like the "woe be me, i'm a powerful supernatural creature but i'd rather be human" trope. so. the writing style was also unemotional—
spoiler -
when tristan died, i felt nothing. when kaye killed liander, which was supposed to be a major climax point, i felt nothing. i barely even realized that casiopea left her powers to ava. that whole exchange felt muted.

so 2.85 stars overall. not bad really, just not one of my more interesting reads this year.
