Reread this as an adult. Still pretty good honestly. Very nostalgic for me

this is one of those books (series, really) that i’ve been meaning to read, but hadn’t gotten to until now. my reading stack is shockingly short, so i quickly grabbed this title and …. it’s good! gripping, thought-provoking and yet written simply and succintly enough that i’d happily hand it to an upper-elementary reader. there is talk of death and nefarious governmental activity, but…. i think it would still be enjoyable to kids not yet in middle school. now i want to read the others!

This book is a great start to a great series. After reading this series Margaret Peterson Haddix became one of my favorite authors.

A slow start, but it ramps up after the first third. There is a bit of a need to suspend disbelief, and sometimes I feel the author's message is a bit heavy handed, but I'd like to see how she pursues the ideas she sets up.
