An exceptional audio performance by a great cast for an utterly forgettable story

Una absoluta maravilla. Una novela epistolar que no deja títere con cabeza. Si además has visto la película de Stephen Frears y puedes poner cara a Madame de Tourvel, a la marquesa de Merteuil y a Valmont, es el complemento perfecto.

There are few things as timeless as jealousy, revenge and sexual indiscretion. If you doubt this, please go watch Cruel Intentions and explain how it could have been a hit movie in 1999, more than 200 years after the book that inspired it was first written. And, sans the teenage heartthrobs, it's a pretty close remake.

The exchange of letters between the naught Vicomte de Valmont, the pious Presidente de Tourvel and the delightfully vicious Marquise de Merteuil, who was "born to revenge my sex and master yours" are absolutely delicious. Classic literature should never feel so scandalous.

A nasty, mean-spirited book that has some delicious bits of devilry but also lets the men off the hook a tad too easy. Not thrilled at all with how the women get the worst of it here but those were the times I guess. If you read this then you can skip Richardson’s Clarissa since it tells a similar story but takes a thousand more pages to do so.

At the beginning of the year, I made a list of classic novels that I had (a) never read or (b) had not read in over 20 years. Dangerous Liasons was a never-read, and with its plot of two tricksters’ nefarious wager over one of them being able to get two unlikely marks into bed, it sounded like a fun read.
I was wrong. The epistolatory form sucked the suspense and fun out of the encounters, Valmont and Merteuil were utterly unsympathetic, and the ‘good’ characters were unforgivably dull. Also, Valmont’s letters to the Presidente de Tourvel, to a modern woman sympathetic to the Me Too movement, were harassing...essentially “you are cruel, because your rejection of my romantic overtures is hurting ME.” I know it’s unfair to judge a work of literature based entirely on modern sentiments, but it was one of many factors that kept me from enjoying this novel very much.

I love horrible, despicable, no good characters and I love it when they get what they deserve.
