Sophie van Llewyn weaves a delicate thread of magic realism throughout this spellbinding story of the brutalities underpinning daily life in Communist Romania.
The threat of interrogation, incarceration and torture from the authorities creates a chilling undercurrent of constant suspicion and imminent danger. This is interwoven with another unremitting source of unease: should even your loved ones be trusted with the truth?
The enchanting narrative unfolds a young couple’s desperate plans for escape to the west, the terrifying setbacks they must face, and their vision of a future without the constant need to glance over their shoulders.
The author draws an intricate picture of The Cold War’s shortages and propaganda, with captivating details of Romanian food and folklore, friendship and family life. Within this novella the heart of a people whose soul was suppressed under the rule of Ceausescu never misses a beat—they still retain a sense of humour, uphold their long-held traditions and cherish their dreams.
While the reader fears for the safety of the charming and determined protagonist, Alina, there is also an pervasive aura of hope which emanates from the characters themselves, especially Alina, and from the magic her beguiling aunt is able to conjure.
Bottled Goods is a hypnotising read because of the supreme quality of the writing, the vivid characterisation and a meticulous attention to detail. The structure suits it perfectly because while each piece is crafted to carry its own weight, the narrative flows with ease throughout the entire novella.
This memorable and hugely enjoyable story, which culminates with the Romanian Revolution and its immediate aftermath, ensures the suffering will never be forgotten. Sophie van Llewyn has brought light into an era which cast a long shadow.

Some books are so full of sorrow, they become poetic. This is one of those books. It's also, a very strange and dark book. The writing style on it's own is interesting enough, but the way this writer manages to let you feel along with Alina is just... whoa! Throw in some Romanian folklore and a touch of magical realism and you've got me. Also, the art cover is stunning, they should have done a whole page of that.

I wasn't sure what I'd think of the novel-in-flash, but I actually liked the structure a lot. I wasn't as happy with the last arc,
after they escaped into Germany
. It felt rushed and like too much ground was covered in too little space - where the earlier parts never felt that way. I came into this knowing about the magical realism and I liked how that was handled.
