Medical suspense that is well written is sometimes hard to find, but Richard Mabry knocks it out of the park with this book. Shannon witnesses her first boyfriend being shot and the PTSD that follows her is revived when another man is shot on her lawn. There were a few story lines to follow in this book, I would love to see another book about Megan and her future journey.
Richard Mabry gives us an inside view of the life of a busy surgeon that has witnessed many hard cases, but shows us the heart of the matter so to speak. Megan and Shannon are also PK’s, which means the turmoil of having issues with dealing with Christianity is also addressed.
I felt like this book was well balanced in giving you a very exciting suspense story, combined with dealing with emotional issues that we know everyone faces. I really have enjoyed books by this author and will be reading more by him when I get the chance!

Overall this was pretty decent. Their was too much telling and most of it seemed unnecessary. The plot moved fast in some parts and slow in others and the ending/wrap up flew by. Thankfully I was able to finish it, but this wasn’t a favorite.

I love a good medical drama and had a murder mystery in and the book is sure to be a hit with me. Critical Condition was a fabulous mix of these that also included some great truths from the word of God. I was pulled in to the murders and the characters and didn't have it all figured out until the end. There are so many twists and turns that it will leave you wondering what is going to happen. I had several people ask me in real life about the book as I was reading it and many sounded intrigued. I would definitely recommend this for your summer reading.

Critical Condition is an intriguing novel that kept me guessing until the end. In addition to the suspense thread (which is really quite good), it also examines family relationships. I saw a lot of myself in Shannon, the "good girl" who always did what was expected of her, even if her heart wasn't in it. (Although I definitely don't have what it takes to be a surgeon!) I enjoyed watching her grow throughout the novel and come to a place where she could truly take control of her life. I also was surprised at the direction the romance took. It was not at all what I expected, but I do think it was fitting. (The other potential romance revealed at the end of the novel? Not so much...)
I did think one of the "bad guys" was pretty obvious ... in fact, he was so obvious that for a while, I thought he couldn't possibly be involved, just because it seemed so apparent! And I couldn't believe that Shannon would "forget" to give vital information to the police. But overall, I really enjoyed this novel. It's a quick read that kept my attention to the last page.
3-1/2 stars
