This book has been on my reading list for the better part of three years, so I really pushed myself to see it through. Lawrence's writing style and imagery are really profound, but the story is lackluster. Also, the characters are pretty intolerable. They're all really impulsive and selfish. The females especially are painted in a negative light - there are multiple instances of unnecessary anger and lashing out. If their husbands disagree, the wives don't love them anymore. The whole novel presents love as this unreal, foolish waste of time.

Ursula, above all else, infuriated me. She is an inconsistent, selfish, spoiled brat. One minute she believes in love, the next she doesn't. She wants to be with Anton, but now she wants to be with Winifred, but wait - just kidding, she wants to be alone. I thought the time she spent as a teacher (which was a waste of story space) would help her grow up, but I guess I was hoping for too much. Also, my understanding was that the book's main heroine was Ursula, yet less than half the book focuses on her.

There are many more worth-while books to be read; don't waste your time with this one.

there are parts that show a great use of language in prose, poetic language even. But there are also times when just pointless stuff happens, like at one point when a character applies for a job and the entire job application process is described. Also the plot isn’t really focused and the book is overly long.

It has some amazingly brilliant moments and storylines, but there's a lot of "get to the point" to get through.

Redundancy can be a nuisance... did I mention I don't like redundancy?
