These stories were like a fever dream that I didn't want to continue reading - and I mean that in the best way possible. These were the perfect creepy stories to read in October. The themes lean heavily into absurdity and surrealism, but in a sinister, speculative fiction type of way. I found myself thinking, Oh damn, what IF??? several times while reading this.
As with any other short story collection, there were stories I liked more than others. The opening story sets the mood for the book perfectly and it's only a couple pages long!

The stories are all quite short which makes for a quick read. Some are better than others but overall the writing is very well done. A few incredibly spooky ones in the collection and an uncomfortable vibe throughout. But Trigger Warnings had me in tears laughing lol.

Absolutely incredible writing and a brilliant way to get back into reading!! A collection of short stories that are completely independent of the others yet each one has the same themes of paranoia and almost there but not quite kind of fear. The part that stuck with me the most is the way he tries to define the edge of what constitutes a singular human(/being) and what happens when you blur that line or even better - is there even a line?

Damn, these little stories were SO good. Perfect snippets of worlds, sometimes conclusive and sometimes not, unsettling and weird and even funny on occasion. Cerebral enough to distinguish themselves but not pretentious. Spooky in varieties of ways. I’m a huge fan, definitely going to try and find more of this author’s work.

Now this is my kind of writing and story telling. No, most of these stories aren't outright frightening to me, but I generally like how they're told. Definitely will read more Brian Evenson in the future.
