'The Virgin Blue' contains all the subtlety and understated passion that made 'The Girl with the Pearl Earring' so heart-wrenchingly beautiful and haunting. Part of what makes Chevalier such an amazing writer is her ability to change locations, situations and characters and yet maintains the a sense of calm with passionate and tumultuous emotions just beneath the surface. The characters are always compelling and realistic, they really draw the reader in even as they give little of themselves away.

My book group decided to read this book wanting to revisit an author we had read before. Unfortunately, this story did not measure up to The Girl with the Pearl Earring.

Fascinating story that really caught my attention from start to finish. I appriciated the way that everything told moved to story forwards, there was no waffle to bulk the book up. More authors need to do this! After I finished it was astonished to find out this is her debut novel! Impressive. Aslo really loved the cover.

I really loved this book even though it dealt with a subject I normally do not like reading about. The story was rich in history and helped me get into the mindset of the time. I enjoyed this book more than Girl With The Pearl Earring, actually.

Ok...I give the historical part a 4.5 and I give the contemporary part a 1.5. This was nowhere near the wonderful book that Girl with a Pearl Earring is. I was disappointed. Ella Turner is an embarrassment to all American women....whiny and pouty...ugh! I stuck with it because Isabel and the Tourniers were made of much sturdier stuff...and I was stuck in the car anyway.

I read this book feverishly in three days - a fun, easy read with some provocative themes. I enjoyed the historical fiction aspect to the story. I am glad I read it a good mood, since it might have depressed me otherwise.
