4 stars. I liked this storyline just as much as the first book. I enjoyed the feminist values of this book. Women who fought tooth and nail for what they believe in and achieving their goals. I.e. becoming a doctor back when it was unheard of. I value that. History has a way of doing women dirty and it still happens today. This book was beautiful, a little terrifying at times(surgery back then 😳) and very heartwarming. I am very happy with how it ended and all the loose ends were tied up nicely. I look forward to reading more from this author. If you enjoy historical fiction and a mix of love, loss, grief, friendships, a little science/doctor stuff, then I definitely recommend this.

I loved the topic. The medical and historical details were great. The characters were righteous and able to overcome almost all obstacles which eliminated a sense of risk. The contrast between England and Italy was interesting but I wish the midwifery element was more central throughout. The books pacing was good and the framing of topics intelligent.

Enjoyed the history and medicine side of it but not massively drawn in by the characters. Hadn't realised it was a sequel but don't really care enough to search it out. 3.5⭐ rounded up - Ambrose Parry does it better.

Loved the first book in this series so much I actually paid for this second one instead of waiting on my copy from the public library. If you like medicine, history, and historical fiction, I highly recommend this series.

Liked this one better than the first. More characters and more dynamic. I did really want the will the won’t they vibe between Nora and Magdalena to become romantic, but I guess that would have been asking too much of the time. Enjoyed the ending and the return of Harry Trimble.
