It's not often you come across books that are so original, but I guess Philip K Dick is the master at this. One of the best of his that I've read so far.

I don't know how many of Dick's 45 novels I've read, but I'd estimate around half, and this was—by far—the best one.

Although this book takes place in our past, it was mostly 25 in the future when it was written in 1969. It's a time of many strange things—as all of Dick's stories are—all of which seem feasible. There are a lot of people with abilities, from reading minds to being able to change the past, to a whole slew of other talents that may or may not exist today. They're much more common, acknowledged, and monetized than they are now, and much of this story focuses on people who either have or profit from these abilities. In addition to this, people have found a way to preserve the minds of dead people. It doesn't work if they don't get the bodies in time, and it doesn't last forever, but if the conditions are right people's loved ones can still communicate with them after death, while they exist in half-life.

Naturally some wonkiness ensues. A groups of people with abilities get assigned a job on the moon, where someone attempts to kill them. The rest of the book focuses on the survivors trying to figure out what the hell is going on—are they alive? are they in half-life? are they dead? is it something else they can't even comprehend?—as the world around them deteriorates around them.

Because of life, it took me longer than it should have to read this book. It's the perfect book for weekend alone in a cabin, and I hope more people read it so we can talk about it. I'd also love to see a movie made, based on this book.
