I thought the first book was quite well done, but while I liked the story of this one, something about the pacing and the way it was done just felt off. I felt the first book did a fair job of switching between parts of the story and shifting views, but this one felt much messier. There was switching mid chapter at various points and I found myself losing the thread of the story and had to retrack several times to figure out what had happened and what was going on. It's very rare that I ever have to do it, so if I do, it's a problem.

A different set up than Redwall, but pretty similar in many ways. I can see a formula developing here- not necissarily a bad thing, I can roll with formulatic writing as long as there are things to keep it fresh.

That aside, I liked the building on Martin and getting to learn more about the celebrated mouse warrior from Redwall. Thought the villian was quite good, though I kept expecting something more to come with her brother and disappointed that there wasn't. It had an unfinished feel to it, which I suspect may be the point as I have been assured that the books jump back and forth in the timeline. This may drive me a little batty, I like to read things in chronological order. ^^ ;

I read all the Redwall books as a kid. I was pretty much obsessed. I loved the adventures taken by these small animals. They were so heroic and the stories were so detailed and imaginative. You get really attached to the characters and the storyline, which spans all the books. I tried to read the books as an adult and they just didn't hit me the same, which is why it only get a 4 star and not a 5.

Thoroughly did not enjoy this second installment in the Redwall series (although it is a prequel to the first book). It felt both uninspired and lazy. With the first novel, Redwall, Jacques keyed into lore and lineage that felt real and passionate. Although the progression of Matthias from stumbling and meek monk-in-training to full-fledged warrior was haphazard and somewhat hurried, there was a still a slight sense of majesty. I think the locale of the Abbey really helped with this. The meetings and decadent meals (which Jacques does best) behind the Abbey walls were quite enjoyable. Mossflower just didnt have that same sense of life that Redwall. did. It was a slog for me and I wanted it to be done. I think it is the worst thing I have read this year. Too much corny dialogue and not enough exposition. Literature directed towards teens doesn't have to feel childish, it can respect the reader. This most certainly did not.

A great book for any fans of Redwall. The plot is fairly predictable and the characters occasionally cheesy. Yet it’s an enjoyable, light-hearted read.

The classic Mossflower - where we meet the found family of Martin the Warrior. So good and such a strong pillar in this series. I love the second half of the book so much, it has some of my favorite scenes.
