This oldie about generational disconnect is still so good and relevant today. So much 19th century Russian literature still slaps.

Ah I feel refreshed! I read a Russian novel (specifically 1800's Russian novels) every winter but I got this one early. Not sure if it was a timing issue where it just wasn't cold, cozy, book reading kinda weather at first or just because I've been so busy with work and class but I couldn't get into it right away. But about halfway through I got caught up into it and really enjoyed it.

I loved this book! Turgenev has an incredibly clean way of describing both setting and characters; just the words you need and no more. This was an interesting insight into Russian culture and the story showed that the relationship between fathers and sons is timeless. The dynamics from the 1800s hold today. This book had more surprises than I anticipated including a plot twist at the end. An enjoyable and quick read.

At times, the book was like a play or a roadtrip, which are fine, but neither the story nor the characters are especially memorable. Indeed, the only message I got was that principles (or lack thereof) are thrown out the window when love arrives.

This is a very moving story of how fathers and sons should and shouldn't interact as a family. It is one of my favorite Russian novels.
