I'm grateful I made it through my teenage year relatively intact.

Lyhyt äänikirja, jossa kerrotaan 16-vuotiaan pakistanilais-englantilaisen tytön kasvutarina. Suht kiinnostava, mut varsin ennalta-arvattavat käänteet tässä on.

This was an interesting thing to listen to, as this is not my typical genre. Because of that, I'm not sure I was the type of audience member who fully appreciated the work. However, the thing I appreciated the most was that it introduced me to a totally different aspect of the human experience. For that, I am grateful. I feel I also appreciated the work more listening to the author describe her thought process behind creating the play at the end of the Audible recording.

I really liked the idea of this, but wasn't all that convinced by the actual execution. What I mean is, it didn't convince me. I really liked the wrap up at the end, and I enjoyed the interview with the author, but listening to the actual work I wasn't convinced the character wasn't just making really dumb choices. They didn't succeed in making ME feel in love, which is what a creator needs to do for me to have sympathy for the character. They have to make ME think I'd have made those decisions in the same situation--if they can't do that, then...I don't think they've accomplished much. Maybe it was just to short to develop that for me. But, like I said, some really beautiful writing near the end, when she starts thinking about the mother of her lover and her own mother, and the scope of all that.

This was very interesting to listen to. The coming of age story of a British Muslim teenager, Diary of a Hounslow Girl definitely sounds more like a play than a book (which it is). It was intriguing the whole time and I listened to it in one sitting. My only complaint is the audio. It’s recorded very quietly and some of the sound that accompanies the story overpowers the voice. 4.5 stars

I am sad to say that all the complaints about the sound quality on this Audible production are spot on. It sounds like it was recorded without a proper microphone. Audible has done Ms. Razia no favors in this production. I know that some have complained that Razia isn't even from Hounslow (she's from South London not West), but it really seems like a petty point. Diary of a Hounslow Girl and Hounslow Diaries (the BBC show) are supposed to be accounts of young British Muslim women and it seems like Razia is quite qualified to write about the topic, at least to me. Her narration, which sounds inspired by her family, is rich with humor.

Some of this Audible production is quite funny but some is also quite poignant. I just wish there had been better sound quality.

Interesting listen. It’s a one woman play, which is important to keep in mind.
The audio recording of this wasn’t that great, it was really quiet.
It’s a look into the life of a teenage girl, where she is and how she is being raised. It’s worth a listen.

Bullet Review:

The audiobook version was a bit iffy - I felt the dialogue was a bit muffled, and thus could not listen to it in my car (it would just get drowned out, unless I jacked up the volume). That said, the narrator is fine, once the story hits full gear, it's actually pretty decent - definitely an eye-opener and outside of my usual picks.

Overall, very impressed; also enjoyed the 15min interview at the end of the Audible version. One of the (unfortunately few) times an Audible Original proves to be a winner.
