This book was magnificent. The author's artwork is so evocative with people's full range of emotions, and beautiful backgrounds/landscapes - I especially liked when one image was split into multiple panels, or people were merged with the background. The story is often heart wrenching - I teared up more than once, both at the immediate pain during evacuation (especially for families with young children), and the decades of pain caused by separation - which was discussed with such great nuance. The character's mother was introduced as perhaps a bit of an eccentric lady, but as the reader learns more about her, we understand her experience and current situation. Like the author's work [b:Grass|41940333|Grass|Keum Suk Gendry-Kim|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1537988062l/41940333._SX50_.jpg|65424928], I highly recommend this book.

This was an excellent fictional graphic novel. Even though it is fictional, the author states that this story is a compilation of stories from various Korean people she interviewed. The story was often heartbreaking and moving. I really enjoyed the illustrations in this graphic novel, and found them to be complex and thought provoking. Highly recommend.

I kinda feel guilty for enjoying books like this, but we need them. It keeps us human.
