The writing style was not difficult to follow or jarring in any way and the pacing was well suited to the narrative. The first person narrative that switches between the two main characters was executed well and did not take away from the pacing and overall immersion into the novel. Many of the main characters, the narrative voices of Stella and Will, in particular, were well developed, distinct, and easy (at times) to empathize with. The humour peppered throughout is well placed and well-executed. I found the storyline to be not as obvious as I expected, as there were a few shocking moments, which was a nice surprise.

While I cannot comment on this particular criticism personally, it’s important to note that there is quite the disagreement within the Cystic Fibrosis community as to whether or not the novel accurately portrays what the life of someone with CF is. Related to this, many have criticized the novel for brushing aside many of the more harsh realities and symptoms that people with CF face daily. In terms of the actual writing, there is an LGBTQ+ character in the novel that was great but could have been better developed as opposed to appearing more like a token. Also, at times the storyline did read more dramatic than realistic which was kind of jarring at certain moments.
