I think I wanted a little more action and a little less metaphor

Like many others here I’m not sure what I just read. But unlike many others here, I really, REALLY liked it. I haven’t read a book this compulsively in a long time. And while I’d agree that it’s not really horror, it had enough of a constant sense of unease to still creep me out. It’s more of a concept piece than a fleshed out story and I wasn’t expecting the ending at all. I feel like I’m just on the edge of understanding what it all meant but I can’t quite reach it. And yet the ambiguity doesn’t detract at all from how much fun I had along the way.

I really hoped for more. I've read 2 or 3 other Malerman books at this point, and I know this is a short story. But the set up was good, very creepy, lots of potential. But then it fizzled out for me and did not enjoy the ending. I know that a lot of the time it's hard to wrap up these far-fetched ideas, but this one just missed me. I will keep being a Malerman fan.

It's spooky at times and I felt the dread of something not letting go of the characters, but the ending left me cold.

While this was definitely a creepy store, I would not label it Horror. Magical Realism seems a better fit.

This was marketed as a thriller, but sitting at barely 160 pages, it was too short to capture any creepy feelings or build suspense. 5 minute mysteries type book.
2 teenagers find a house at the bottom of a lake and spend the summer exploring it. The foundation was there for a good creepy build up, but there was no decent execution because of the length. The house feeling almost alive, the weird noises they hear, the pieces of it that make them feel like someone is still living in it, the way it calls them back even when they leave for good- it's all THERE, but unfortunately, just wasn't fleshed out or explored.
