What started as a charming mystery led by a local historian took a deeply racist turn with the arrival of characters from Africa. It continued to dig into more and more colonialist anti-African beliefs until it became clear that the central mystery was going to be mired in white English fears about voodoo and "savage" witchcraft. I could no longer maintain my enthusiasm for the story.
