The kind of vile racism that shows genuine hatred, just gross to read

What started as a charming mystery led by a local historian took a deeply racist turn with the arrival of characters from Africa. It continued to dig into more and more colonialist anti-African beliefs until it became clear that the central mystery was going to be mired in white English fears about voodoo and "savage" witchcraft. I could no longer maintain my enthusiasm for the story.

I adore the movie, and even though I knew the book would not be anywhere near as silly (the film was very loosely based on Stoker's story), I still wanted to give this a read. Plus, I'm a huge fan of "Dracula" since I've read it multiple times for both school and pleasure. When I saw that "Lair of the White Worm" was available for free through my Audible membership, I couldn't pass up the opportunity. Unfortunately, I should have passed on it.

What could have been an adventurous monster hunting story ended up being a rambling tale that was less action packed than "Dracula" and much more racist. Any interesting chapters dealt with the history of the monster and the land it occupied, but the rest of the story was surprisingly boring. And maybe it's just because this one couldn't hold my attention, but I'm not confident I could give a clear summary of the plot. I probably should've DNFed this.

Don't read this, this book took me so long to read cause it caused a billion reading slumps. I just don't know how to DNF a book but I would've if I could. I just have it in my mind I have to finish every book I start and this one was the worst one l've ever read. The racism in this book even if it's just showing the time and how horrible it was back then was sickening. I don't know how it's still being published. The writing itself was badly done. The pacing was all over the place they'd go into pages of some useless stories and then the actual important parts were summed up in a paragraph. The ending was rushed like the rest of the important parts. I can't imagine a book worse than this one. Glad it's over.

Namby pamby syphilitic nonsense.
With a more serious tone, it's really not his best, especially considering it was his last novel. The Wikipedia summary reads better than this novel and I couldn't understand the motivations of characters, what each character knew about events happening, or even what some of the events were at times. Prevalent racism against one of the characters of colour throughout as well. Still not sure on the identity of the worm.
