I’m not a huge fan of middle books where two characters have been separated and you’re slogging through chapter after chapter waiting for their reunion, so this book DRAGGED for me. I’m also not a fan of Malina’s AT ALL, so her chapters were doubly painful. Though, she did redeem herself a bit, I guess. And WTF was that ending?! Book 6 is going to hurt, I can already feel it.

I really want to see how this story ends. I liked this booka bit more than the previous books.

The characters were good in general, I feel like this book showed how they've been growing throughout the books.

We also started the redemption arc of Queen Malina, so I'd like to see more of her growing into her powers and as a person. She has potential to be recognized as a respected royal, as she wished her whole life. However her spicy scenes are really cringey in my opinion, they felt awkward and forced.
I also hated the instalove of her story. They hate each other and in the next chapter they are kind of flirting and Malina starts acknowledging her attraction to the assassin (forgot his name, sorry).

Honestly, I think I also enjoyed this book more because I didn't have to read through the spicy scenes between Slade and Auren, since they were appart.
Yes, their scenes were good, but I guess I prefer fantasy without romance and spicy scenes in the way.
Now, that's just my opinion and preference.

Moving on to the story, everything was painfully obvious most of the time.
I think the only thing I wasn't expecting was Wick being also a Turley, but appart from that, I saw everything coming.
The author was giving us signals nonstop, specially about Slade's father and the oreans trapped in Lord Culls mannor being the "lost" inhabitants of (again, forgot the name) the hidden village crated because of the rip.  I feel like anyone paying a bit of attention to his backstory would have seen that coming. Also the fact of Auren and Slade being Päyur was obvious to me, so no surprises there

I hope Raven Kennedy give us a cool next book in which we can appreciate even more growth of the characters and also ve able to see everyone's power in the war.
Hopefully things will not be as predictable as in this book, so it can get interesting.

I waited too long and have forgotten basically everything. But I’m almost glad I did. The recap was drawn out, but by chapter 10 I remembered what I needed to remember with a few little helpful parts. But for the most part this was a slow paced book. RK was comfortable skipping long periods of time between POV chapters in her previous books… I’m not sure why this one had to include every second.

This was a heavily side character building book. It felt like filler for the over arching plot and main characters. For a 600 page book… that’s not a good thing. We get a redemption arc and romance for one character. We get Auren’s backstory. We get some world-building in the fae realm… but we don’t get resolution to anything.

There is one spicy scene between side characters and it really was out of nowhere and not good timing. At. All. Like normally grey timing… which I guess fits, but it still gave me the ick.

There is quite a bit of repetitive internal monologue. Nothing new for the series with that.

But the ending plot twist is interesting. I will finish the series.

This was a great continuation of this series.
I am just sad we don’t see Auren and Slade together.

I wanted to read this book because the first four books in this series was gifted to me by Michael Joseph Penguin Publishing and I thought this was going to be the last book and was very excited especially with how big it was, but it just fell flat, and it’s not the last book in the series.

This book is still based on Auren. She thought she was going to die and she would have if it wasn’t for Slade. The only way he could save her was to open a rip between worlds. The only way for her to save herself was to go through it. Sometimes, fleeing one dangerous place just brings you to another. Annwyn. The realm of the fae. There is magic and beauty here, through around every corner, threats lurk. But Auren knows she is a threat too. She is not the girl in the gilded cage anymore, and no one is going to stop her from finding her way back to Slade. But returning home means facing danger and secrets. So she will have to burn bright enough to light her own way or else she might be swallowed by the dark.

You’re telling me I read 630 pages and there was no reunion between Auren and Slade and Auren’s memory is gone. Are you kidding me? This book could have been 200 pages and I think I would have liked it more. It was just a filler book where nothing happened to our main characters who we all wanted to see reunite. All the drama and actioned was going on between the side characters and it was the characters I just didn’t care about. I only wanted Auren and Slade. I didn’t care about Malina and her love story – I'm glad she’s not a shit Queen anymore, but she doesn’t deserve the love story she is getting. Osrik and Rissa, I also don’t care about especially with how much of a bitch Rissa has been in the past books. I found myself skimming over those chapters and wanting to get back to Auren and Slade.

They were the chapters I liked, Slade not giving too shits about the politics and just wanted to get revenge for Auren and was working his butt off to get the rip open. I liked the aspect that they are bonded together and that Auren using her power could potentially kill Slade and she doesn’t even know because they are separated.

Overall, it felt like Raven didn’t want to give this series up yet so decided to try and drag this book on and then got too carried away with the side characters. I probably won’t remember this book in a week or two and hopefully the last book of the series will be worth it.

Definitely mixed emotions but overall very satisfied with this book. It was a bit slow at times and tough to get through but it was a refreshing change of plot line that for a 5th book was much needed now that the original villain was dead. The last 200 pages were incredible and I flew through them. Never thought I hold enjoy a Malina redemption arc but I found myself looking forward to her chapters and really enjoyed her character development. The twists and turns in Annywyn had me extremely invested as well and I can’t wait to see what she has in store to finish out the story.
