This book made sleeping on hay covered by a blanket seem appealing.

What a wonderful, uplifting, heartful story! I just purchased 5 more copies. Such a heartwarming story. Loved it and will read it again. And again!

Oh to be on a Swiss mountainside having a meal of milk, bread, and cheese among the flowers while my goat friends frolic!

I never read this as a kid. A bit cringy with all the religion, but a very simple, loving story with a lush pastoral setting and a vivacious and irrepressible heroine. It reminded me a bit of Anne of Green Gables in some ways.

This was a sweet book; but I must confess it didn't grab me. {I know, it's not a 'grabbing' sort of book... but then neither is Secret Garden... or Anne of Green Gables! So perhaps that's not the best phrase: it didn't sentimentally enchant me for life ;)} I did ADORE all the lovely mountainy descriptions ^_^. It was a pleasure to read any scene in the mountains... BUT Heidi's time in Frankfurt and the story, such as it was, I confess didn't really interest me.

But the mountainesque descriptions were worth it

I kept thinking of Jane Eyre while reading this. Not sure why. Anywho, I was gently prodded to read this despite my bias against it. I had labeled it sunny happy fluff. While it had sunny aspects it was not fluff. Enjoyed the scriptures and biblical teachings woven throughout. Always a sucker for a redemption arch in a story too. Well done

I reread this story frequently as a girl. One of the most evocative and effectively descriptive books I’ve ever read. A wonderful story about a young girl who goes to live with her grandfather in the Swiss Alps. Loved the side story that takes place in town away from her grandfather as well. I always craved cheese and bread as I read the story, and there was nothing more satisfying than curling up with Heidi and some cheese & bread. When young, I didn’t understand that the goat cheese described in the book was different from the cow’s milk cheese I ate. (Now that I’m a long term vegan, I would no longer crave any animal procured cheese, but I think I’d still enjoy the story.) A worthy children’s classic.

The sequels: Heidi Grows Up and Heidi’s Children were written by a different author – the original author’s translator. I enjoyed them, but they were not as pleasurable to read as Heidi.

Having read this book several times in my childhood, I was immediately comforted by the familiar words as they came back to me with such clarity. Heidi is a book for all ages, full of the simplistic joy and appreciation for nature and those around us.
