The plot is sound, and entertaining enough that I’ll continue with the series, but I’m not sure why it’s getting all the hype that it is, since it’s not exactly groundbreaking to the world of fantasy.
The dialogue reads like a cheap soap opera 80% of the time, though that seems to be a symptom most bookstagram favorites suffer from these days. While the spicy scenes certainly don’t leave anything up to the imagination, I appreciate that they don’t fall into the same traps of using ridiculous descriptors as some other romantasies that come to mind.
That said, this installment had some plot twists that were actually surprising, and the story still sufficiently pulled me in (except when the dialogue got too ridiculous not to laugh).

The book started great - the twist with Brennan and how Xaden was helping Poromiel. I enjoyed how Violet was basically a double agent and had to keep secrets while in Basgiath. I personally think that things went downhill after Major Varrish was killed. I like how the riders were given a choice to help the rebellion, but the weird fight between Violet and Xaden while in Aretia, how General Sorrengail knew everything but had a come to Jesus moment and saved the ward stone, to how Xaden is now venin? It was a fast rollercoaster at the end with a meh finish.
