Don't read this book before reading Fourth Wing, you'll miss some major plot points.

Not sure how I feel about the cliffhanger of this book. It feels strange and hopeless. There was less conspiracy intrigue and more fighting amongst the groups, including Xaden & Violet. The lovers quarrels were taxing for me after a while even if it was understandable arguments.

I do like the lore building in this book and I'd like to see more of it now that the scribes are fully involved and the secret is out about the wyverns and venin.

After a SLOW start (and I mean especially compared to Fourth Wing, this start was SO slow), Yarros pulled it back for me at the halfway mark.

Positives… obviously XADEN 🥵… The section relationships continued to grow and develop, I genuinely adore Rhianon, Varrish was a strong villain, I was kept guessing about Andarna. Another obvious one is Tairn, that sassy king 👑

Negatives… Violet was whiney. So whiney. If I have to read “full disclosure” ever again, it will be too soon. The whole “you have to ask” was a bit overplayed too (but I’m not going to throw any stones at Xaden because he is beautiful and perfect and he has more than enough to deal with right now). Slow start was killing it a bit for me (but oh boy… that finish 🤯)

I am SO ready for Onyx Storm… Yarros, give me what you’ve got, I’m ready to be broken all over again 🔥

I had a really hard time getting through this book the first time, but my reread was much more enjoyable. Understanding the reason for the ongoing conflict between Xaden and Violet that is revealed more at the end, made the second time through waaay better.

This is a toss up between 4.5 and 4.75. It was very good though had some points where it dragged.

A lot of new characters are introduced and at times I found it hard knowing who was who.

However this book is great, full of twists and turns, has a lot more world building than the first. The ending is a shocker 🥰

This was a great continuation of the series! There is a lot of world expansion, some new characters, spicy moments and bad-ass fight scenes. The author dives more into mental health struggles and this book felt more violent in aspects than the first. Overall I can't wait to see where it goes from here!

Holy shit.

Very quickly this series has become one of my favorites.

Now we wait for Onyx Storm and hope for the best for all of our characters
