3.5–4 stars for most of the book. I would give the Frodo and Sam scenes more than five stars if I could.

There is nothing I can add to already-established discourse about this book, series, or author. Y'all know the drill. 5/5, forever.

Rob Inglis, the narrator, also gets 5/5.

If like me you put off reading this for years, do yourself a favour and pick it up. It's just as good as you've heard it is. :)

Once again, Andy Serkis does an amazing job narrating. He does really capture the characters and I feel like he kind of channels the performance of the other actors from the movies. His overall way of narrating also conveys the wonder and whimsy and magic of Tolkien's world and descriptions. It's just fun to listen to.
The book is wonderful outside of Serkis' performance of course. Tolkien was an amazing writer. I feel like the way he carries the narrative from description to world building flows so well. While time felt a bit loose and things would just happen, it matched the way the story was told. Like I was reading the old stories of myths and legends and folklore. It was genuinely a very well written, wonderful story.
