I didn’t read this as a child so I don’t have the benefit of nostalgia. This is a super weird book. It’ll take you an hour to read it. Give it a shot. I hope you like descriptions of how to butcher wildlife or make a balloon out of an animal bladder.

I could roll with that actually. I love a pioneer story.

The careless misogyny and racism got to me though. And the rampant physical discipline which is celebrated? Moralized?

The TV show must omit a lot of this.

Listened to the audiobook with my boys. Early on my oldest said "Mom, this is just a cookbook!"

We all enjoyed this book - especially Pa's stories of his childhood. Our favourite was the pig on the sled!

The writing wasn't that great and it was boring. Additionally, as a result of the times there was a strict patriarchal social structure that was a bit grating.

Re-read this with my eight year old. This was never my favorite of the little house series and reading it now it felt a little "this is how good girls behave" but my daughter found it interesting and I still have a fondness for the series.
