Wish the book focused more on the how than the who. The motives felt contrived and unbelievable (IMO) great first half, but the second half dragged.

Certainly not the best Harry Hole novel - the plot moved along mechanically in what felt like an inevitable way: formulaic. Perhaps it's that on book 11, the Harry Hole formula no longer excites me - we shall see because I'm sure as shit still going to read the next one.

It was so bizarre reading this book after just rereading [b:The Snowman|9572203|The Snowman (Harry Hole, #7)|Jo Nesbø|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1355881478s/9572203.jpg|2697052]. In many ways, it was quite reminiscent of that book - women being killed, constant red herrings... One of the most strange things was seeing how much Harry (and other characters, like Bjorn, Katrine, and Oleg) have both changed and stayed the same over the course of the series. I think I need to reread several of the more recent installments, because I just can't remember how Harry got where he is now And many more changes might be in the works for him now . I do wonder if Nesbø is setting up Oleg to take over Harry's role as the series star now that Harry is getting older - I don't think I'm ready for that!
Like we just talked about in my book club about The Snowman, Nesbø has a way of toeing the line when it come to gore without quite going over it. (Of course, I refer you to [b:Headhunters|11777020|Headhunters|Jo Nesbø|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1320551831s/11777020.jpg|3609998] for an instance when he went too far for me.) This one was up there with [b:The Leopard|23355220|The Leopard (Harry Hole, #8)|Jo Nesbø|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1413045306s/23355220.jpg|7112263] as far as gruesome death went, but I just managed to contain my disgust. A lot of that was mitigated when the killer is revealed and the motive clears things up... Although the ending then offers up another twist that makes me wonder if the crimes were really solved - even though they were - or if he's just prefacing #12.
Oh, I'm just rambling. Do you expect a concise review from me on any Nesbø novel? I'm not a police procedural fan by any means, but I'm certainly a Harry Hole fan. It feels like ages since [b:Police|18142329|Police (Harry Hole, #10)|Jo Nesbø|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1373049226s/18142329.jpg|21962567], and I know it will feel like ages until #12 - and in the meantime, I'll forget how he left things here!
Oh, and as a side note... I wonder what happened to Don Bartlett.
