Twisty, and more modern in the 70s setting. Loved it!

This was an interesting one because instead of beginning with a murder, it starts with a young woman thinking she had committed one, but not having any evidence or even a body. This piques Poirot's interest as well and he starts to look into this woman, her family, friends and living situation.

I've always had an issue placing any Christie book outside of the 1930-1950 period. However, the 1970s was very evident here and very informative. I was interested to learn that the pracrtise of young women subleting the remaining rooms in their rental apartments out to other young women sort of started then.

Christie used the proliferation of drugs as a theme in this one, which was also very timely. I thought the mystery itself was good and typical Christie. However, I found the social observations a bit too much. I don't exactly read a cosy murder mystery for those so for the first time, actually skipped bits of the novel.

For once, I guessed one of the malefactors before Poirot revealed them. I was still surprised by other things, because Dame Agatha is unparalleled, even in her lesser works.

Young woman wants to consult Hercule Poirot because she may have murdered someone, but she isn’t sure. (She is the “third girl” as Ariadne Oliver explains that 2 girl friends get a flat together and to save money by sharing with a 3td girl so they advertise and it’s luck of the draw) Girl decides that Poirot is too old to understand and leaves. He is offended but intrigued and feels she needs some help. He goes to Ariadne Oliver for advice and she points him in the right direction and decides to help him.

Father and stepmom have recently come back from Africa years after dad abandoned the girl and mom for another woman. Things didn’t work out with woman but he stays for the adventure. (Everything he touches seems to turn to gold) When his older brother dies, he returns to run the family company. He also takes in the 3rd girl since his ex died.

There is a bit of money involved, a pretty goy who doesn’t like to work, an old military type. All comes down to how reliable the 3rd girl is and if Poirot can unravel who she thinks she killed.

Everyone gets frantic when it seems like the 3rd girl disappears. (Poirot knows more than he is telling)
