“My Way Home” by Holly Heaton is a charming story with all the ingredients for a truly memorable children’s book. From the start, it draws readers into a world of friendship, bravery, and self-discovery themes. Heaton blends relatable experiences with just the right touch of adventure. Every page presents an opportunity to learn and discuss.
The book is full of wisdom that speaks to children and adults alike. As young readers follow Kit of the Little People’s journey, they’re invited to consider what “home” really means and how finding it can sometimes lead us to unexpected places. But it’s comforting to return home to friends and loved ones at the end of an adventure.
The story also feels like a comforting companion that encourages resilience and curiosity, two qualities that young minds are always ready to explore.
The pen and colored pencil illustrations perfectly complement the text. They are vibrant and beautifully detailed, bringing each moment and emotion to life. Heaton’s writing is lively and has a cadence that makes reading aloud a joy.
If you’re looking for a story that leaves young hearts inspired and smiling, “My Way Home” is a treasure you’ll want to revisit time and again. I can see this book being handed down for future generations to enjoy.
Read through Kindle Unlimited and for a tour. This review is my honest, unbiased opinion.

When a fox snuck into the home of the Little Folk, he stole their crystal that had ensured they had an abundant harvest every year. Young Kit embarks on an adventure, tracking the wolf to retrieve the crystal for his family.
This is a beautiful picture book. I loved that Kit was clever in outsmarting the fox to get the crystal back. The illustrations were gorgeous. They were coloured in pencil crayons, which gave them a natural effect, reflecting the forest setting.
My Way Home is a beautiful picture book!

This book was so cute. While the story was well written and captivating, what really set this book apart is the illustrations. They were so vivid and bright. The author did them herself. They really shined and sucked my daughter and I into the story. I enjoyed sharing this one with my daughter. She loved how bright the illustrations were. The story is great as well. It’s a story of triumph and perseverance. So not only does it have a wonderful message, but it’s great to look at.
This book is perfect for my daughter, who is working on independent reading. She and I worked through it together and I know it won’t be long before she’s reading it on her own.
Check this one out if you want a great book for a newly independent reader, and gorgeous illustrations.
Also, if you want to learn more about the authors illustration process, check out their page, it’s mesmerizing.

My Way Home is a fun adventure in a wonderfully illustrated world. What I love about the legends of little folk is both the awe of a world so much bigger than you and the danger that comes with it. Heaton strikes the balance well. Take the fox. Her orange-red fur is beautiful and vivid but when she catches Kit in her sights it’s clear how much danger he’s in. Or the sight of Kit at the base of a tree bigger than anything in his world.
Quick-witted and determined, I enjoyed seeing how Kit worked through obstacles. I was surprised by some of his strategies but they felt natural to someone who lives as he does.
But I can’t emphasise enough how beautiful this book is. There are various styles of composition used through the book but my favourite are its borders that show off the kind of wildlife to be found in the environments that Kit finds himself travelling through. It made me want to go out and see what might be living around me.

I enjoyed the premise of the book, it was different and fun to read one within this setting. The illustrations/pictures were so cool. They really pulled the story together and amped it up further. The artist whom is also the writer did a wonderful job! Super gorgeous art. Holly accomplished both well.
I adored the adventure aspect it made it quite exciting and so enjoyable! Really fun and nostalgic in a way.
I know kids will definitely like this for I certainly did and so did my 11 year old niece. She told me she liked that the character was brave despite being so little which was something that I agreed with once she had stated so. Additionally she loved the illustrations as well.
