I love the entire premise of Ghost World, the two main characters, their fed-up anti-attitudes and their questionable friendship. However, I've only ever seen the movie up until now.
I did like this original graphic novel, however; perhaps because of the rich world the movie and its soundtrack built up in my head, I couldn't enjoy this quite as much.
Sometimes the language and themes in general were too harsh for me, not in a quirky, but in a deregatory or "too-serious" way. I didn't appreciate the way gay people were used as a joke.
The drawings were great! I love the way Clowes uses green to accentuate.

I’m not sure I get this book. Two friends who are kind of jerks to everyone around them suddenly become jerks to each other and then aren’t friends anymore? I don’t know. I do know that it was not really my jam.

Not my cup of tea, but definitely see it as a jumping off point for the movie.

Underwhelming, to say the least. I laughed (or made laughing sounds? Or had some air come out of my nose?) around 3 times. The art is great, the dialogue irreverent, but I really don't get the hype. Plotless, slow-paced (with dialogue that seems a bit frantic? I don't know how the hell that is possible). I am detached from the characters and will probably forget about them by tomorrow.
Question: Why does this have a movie?? God forbid I be tricked into watching that.
Question 2: Why are there so many 5-star reviews?? Did I miss out on anything???
I'm sure there is a point to this — maybe this is an accurate portrayal of someone's adolescence? Who knows? I'll never know.

Not sure I "get" this one. Teenage angst, finding yourself, coming to understand the world...yeah. Great artwork and some interesting characters though.

This should have taken me no time to read as it's an 80 page graphic novel but I had to read it over the course of three days because it was just so bad. I couldn't relate to any of these characters because they were all so whiny. I don't know anyone who acted like this or talked like this no matter how cynical and ~cool~ they were trying to be. I didn't feel like Clowes was able to capture the relationship of two teenage girl friends very well, but after reading some of the other reviews who say it matched them well, maybe it just didn't work for me since there were no parallels between my friends and me and Enid and Rebecca.
I felt like I had to finish it even though I hated it since it was so short, and really I'm glad I did since it's such a popular graphic novel, but I did not enjoy any aspect of it at all.

for some reason this made me sad - i just kept asking “is this really what im like?”
i am always wary of books about teenage girls written by adult men
i read a bunch of reviews taking about how pessimistic and annoying and unlikeable the main girls are, but like
oh well ? maybe it’s so nihilist on purpose and i don’t think every female character has to be likable and happy
maybe this is just “the stranger” but teenage girls <3
